Surface Flies

Surface popping flies such as Bob’s Bangers are used to create lots of surface noise and commotion to attract the fish. Cast out a leave for a few seconds them pull hard in short jerks and vary the timing, the takes are stunning! Good for bass, mackerel and especially summer pike!

Fag Ash Lil

Designed by an English angler, Giles Johnson, for UK and Euopean SWFF,to suit all conditions. The genesis of fly was born out by his dislike of poppers.I also felt that our bass are as different (which they most certainly are!) from their North American cousins, so the need for something a little less aggressive in it action and bit more restrained was sought. Giles intention for the fly was to be “nurdled” in and out of nooks and crannies and between weed beds in stillish water where it can be very effective. The retrieve is important wherever it is fished, favouring a roly-poly retrieve over the strip. The continuous wake that the fly produces seems to pull the fish in, or use it to “pop” by aggressive stripping, but a steady retrieve seems to work best. Use the fly with confidence at anytime in low wind/calm conditions but particularly in low light and dark at either end of the day, A good fly to be used by sport anglers anywhere in the world.

Ocean Gurgler-long tail

The Gurgler is one of the most popular and successful surface fly designed in recent years (originally by Jack Gartside), used by anglers all over the world, for a wide variety of sportfish, such as European bass or stripers, freshwater bass, salmon, steelhead, tarpon, snook, redfish, or just bout any other fish that will take a surface fly. This longtail gurgler fly has a fantastic swimming action and can be used in either freshwater or saltwater in a variety of colours to suit conditions or whims. A lot of people do not believe the fish pay much attention to the different colours, but I find that under certain light conditions it is easier to see bright or black, this often makes a big difference with your confidence in the fly.
